Retail Store Closing Checklist
Free template · Updated 26 October 2026
A retail store closing checklist protects the store overnight and sets up the next day. It covers the steps that matter most at closing time: making sure no one is left inside, securing the cash and leaving the floor ready for the opening team.
Adapt the template to your store, and follow your own cash handling and security procedures where they differ.
Before closing
- Let customers know the store is closing soon
- Bring in outdoor displays and signs
- Check the fitting rooms, toilets and every aisle for customers before locking the doors
Sales floor
- Return items from fitting rooms and the counter to the shelves
- Tidy and face up the displays
- Fill gaps from the stockroom where you can
- Note low or missing stock for the next order
Till and cash
- Cash up and record the takings
- Check card totals against the point-of-sale report
- Run the end-of-day report
- Put the cash in the safe or prepare the banking, following your cash policy
Cleaning
- Empty the bins and replace the liners
- Sweep or vacuum the floor
- Wipe the counter, card readers and glass surfaces
Lock-up
- Turn off screens, equipment and lights, leaving on any security lighting
- Check that the back door, stockroom and windows are locked
- Set the alarm and lock the front door
Tips for using this checklist
Count the takings in the back office
It's quicker and more private than counting at the front counter, and you can focus without customers or passers-by around.
Close in pairs if your policy says so
Many stores ask for two people at closing. If yours does, make it part of the checklist so nobody locks up alone.
Leave notes for the morning
A short note on low stock, customer orders or anything unusual helps the opening team start the day without guessing.
Every business is different, so adapt this checklist to yours and to your local requirements.
