Café Closing Checklist

Free template · Updated 26 October 2026

A good close is half of a good opening. A café closing checklist makes sure the coffee machine is cleaned, food is stored properly, the cash is secured and the doors are locked, even at the end of a long day when it's tempting to rush.

Adapt the template to your café: add the cleaning steps your machine maker recommends, and remove anything you don't do.

Before you close the doors

  • Stop taking orders at your set time and let customers know you're closing
  • Bring in outdoor furniture, signs and menu boards
  • Clear the tables and collect cups and dishes

Coffee machine

  • Backflush the group heads with cleaner, following the machine maker's instructions
  • Soak the portafilters and baskets
  • Purge and wipe the steam wands
  • Empty and clean the drip tray and knock box
  • Clean the grinder chute and the area around the grinder

Food and fridges

  • Put away or throw out food from the display, following your food safety plan
  • Cover, label and date any food kept for tomorrow
  • Check fridge and freezer temperatures and record them if your plan requires it
  • Make sure fridge and freezer doors are fully closed

Cleaning

  • Run the last dishwasher load and leave the dishwasher open to dry
  • Clean and sanitise counters, prep areas and the display cabinet
  • Wash milk jugs, blenders and other small equipment
  • Sweep and mop the floors
  • Empty the waste and recycling bins and put in new liners
  • Clean and restock the toilets

Cash and lock-up

  • Count the till, record the takings and put the cash somewhere secure
  • Turn off equipment that shouldn't run overnight
  • Check that windows, the back door and storage areas are locked
  • Turn off the lights, set the alarm and lock the front door

Tips for using this checklist

Leave the café ready for the morning

Restock cups, lids and napkins before you leave. The opening team will thank you, and the first rush of the day goes much more smoothly.

Let the opening team check the close

The opening shift is the first to notice anything that was missed. Ask them to report it, so the closing checklist can be improved rather than someone being blamed.

Note anything that needs a fix

If the grinder sounded off or the dishwasher needs a look, note it before you leave. Small fixes are easier when they're caught early.

Every business is different, so adapt this checklist to yours and to your local requirements.
